Trial of Mete Sayar

In 2013, 23rd Gendarmerie Border Brigade Commander Mete Sayar, Görümlü 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion Commander retired Colonel Hasan Basri Vural, 3rd Company Team Commander First Lieutenant İbrahim Kıraç, Lieutenant Murat Ali Yıldız, Second Lieutenant Serdar Tekin of the Kayseri Airborne Brigade, and Tansel Erok of the 2nd Commando Battalion Command were charged with homicide with connection to the enforced disappearance of 6 people in the Görümlü village of the Şırnak province.  None of the defendants were detained during the trial that was transferred from Şırnak to Ankara due to alleged security reasons. On the 3 July 2015 hearing, the prosecutor asked that the defendants be acquitted due to lack of evidence. Without giving the legal representatives of the victims a chance to state their opposition to the prosecutor’s demand, the Ankara 9th Assize Court ruled for the acquittal of the defendants.
